Tassie's Big Summer of Sport About to Start

The first event is the test game between Australia and New Zealand - Tasmania’s biggest sports summer in history is only three weeks from starting. This summer’s sport action includes AFL, international cricket, domestic cricket and national soccer, and is spread out across three different regions.

November 22-26, 2001: International cricket hits the new Bellerive Oval with Australia looking to beat the Kiwis in the second “Across the Tasman” test game. Following the famous test of 99/00 at the ground (which some say was the best ever test played on Australian soil) between Australia and Pakistan, and the enormous success of the One Day International in January which attracted a near record crowd of 11,115, this test is bound to be a classic.

January 15, 2002: Another international cricket match comes to Bellerive with New Zealand playing South Africa. Due to the deal between the TCA and the ACB, Australia will not be playing in a One Day International this season at Bellerive, but this game should be a ripper between two very good cricket teams.

February 10, 2002: Devonport’s big day of cricket, with the champion New South Wales ING Cup team coming to town to take on Tasmania in what should also be a great game at the Devonport Oval. Last season’s game at Devonport between Tasmania and South Australia attracted a record 3,000 fans.

February 17, 2002: AFL comes to York Park again, with Hawthorn taking on the Kangaroos in a pre-season match. Last season’s AFL pre-season match at York Park attracted 13,958 spectators in which Hawthorn played Richmond.

February 23, 2002: Although not confirmed yet, York Park is more than likely to get a taste of National Soccer League for the first time in Tasmania through the Melbourne Knights and Perth Glory. The game, which will start at 7:30 p.m., will be Tasmania’s first NSL match and will be York Park’s second interstate event within six days.

April 14, 2002: York Park will once again be the stage for an AFL game, with Hawthorn’s first roster match of season at the ground, and will be against Fremantle. The other roster match will be on June 2 against Port Adelaide. 2001’s only roster game at York Park between Hawthorn and Adelaide attracted a record crowd of 17,460.

Leigh Walker Wins William Leitch Medal

Tonight Leigh Walker won the William Leitch Medal for the best and fairest in Tasmania's VFL team. On a 5-4-3-2-1 voting system (voted by the coaching panel), Walker won the award with 67 votes, well clear of Brad Davis with 58 and skipper and reigning winner Nathan Howard with 57. The player who has the honour of kicking the first ever goal for the VFL side, Brett Geappen, finished fourth. Walker was from the North Launceston Bombers in the SWL last year, as was Howard, and Davis was from the Burnie Dockers. The Leitch Medal was used for the best and fairest in the Hobart based TFL until the statewide TFL in 1986, and with the demise of the statewide league in 2000, is now awarded to the best and fairest in the VFL side. Kane Richter won the Davidson Medal for the best and fairest Tassie Mariner in the TAC Cup.
