Rugby Union World Cup Match for York Park?

With the announcement that Australia would host next year's Rugby Union World Cup alone, it now seems likely that York Park in Launceston will host a match in the series. The ground satisfies all criteria, and with the ARU saying that they wantedto play games all around the country, it just seems right to play one in Tasmania.

15,066 Witness York Park Match

The third highest crowd in York Park's history, 15,066, watched last Sunday's AFL roster match between Hawthorn and Fremantle, which Hawthorn won by 10 points.

The crowd was the third highest in the stadium's history, behind the 17,460 for the AFL match between Hawthorn and Adelaide last year and the 15,600 for the Tasmania v. Victoria State of Origin match in 1960.

Another Huge Crowd Witnesses York Park Clash

Another huge crowd witnessed the pre-season match between Hawthorn and the Kangaroos at York Park today. 12,880, the fifth highest crowd ever at the venue, witnessed a top class match with Hawthorn winning by 21 points. It follows crowds of 13,958 against Richmond in the pre-season last year, and a record 17,460 for the roster match between Hawthorn and Adelaide last year.

Major Cricketing Coup for Hobart

For the first time in cricketing history, Australia will take on traditional rivals England in a One Day International at Bellerive. The match will be played in January 2003 (next season) and will be used by the TCA as the official opening of the Bellerive Oval's $16 million redevelopment. Given good weather, a record crowd at what will then be the 16,000 capacity international venue seems highly likely.

Bellerive hosts one One Day International match a season, with Australia playing every two years, and a test match every two seasons (when a neutral One Day Intenational match is played). Last season (2000/01) a near record crowd of 11,115 attended in Australia's last One Day International at Hobart, with Australia defeating Zimbabwe by 6 wickets.

NSL Match at York Park Confirmed

The NSL round 20 match between the Melbourne Knights and Perth Glory which was proposed to be played at York Park has now been confirmed to be played at that venue. The game will be played on Saturday, 23rd of February next year will start at 7pm and a crowd of up to 5,000 is expected. Melbourne are now not allowed to play main arch-rival Perth in Melbourne after a riot broke out when the sides met in last season's final.

NSL has never been played in Tasmania before, and February's game may well become the first of many that the Knights will play at York Park, with Soccer Tasmania expected to sign a deal with the team to play matches at the ground, similar to the deal Hawthorn have at the venue in the AFL.

With the national touch football championships and a Hawthorn v Kangaroos pre-season AFL match to be played at York Park in the two weeks leading up to the NSL match, the grounds diversity will be tested to the hardest.

York Park to Undergo Another Upgrade

At a cost of $1 million (given by the state government), York Park will have another 6,000 seats added behind each goals ready for next season's AFL matches. The stands, which will be open, will run from about 5 metres from the Northern Stand up to a few metres from the scoreboard, and from next to the Southern Stand into the wet area.

Examiner Story: By MARTIN GILMOUR , Wednesday, 14 November 2001 York Park will officially become the State's biggest sports stadium with yesterday's announcement that an additional 6100 seats will be built by February.
The State's only AFL venue will now boast 10,000 seats and a total capacity of more than 20,000 people and further consolidate it as Hawthorn's second home.
The additional seating will cost the State Government $1 million from its Infrastructure Fund but it will dramatically improve economics of the venue and may limit the Government's long-term need to underwrite games.
Seating company Starena International has been awarded the contract, which will involve the installation of 2000 individual tilt- up seats at both the northern and southern ends of the ground and also on the railway wing.
The grandstands will give the ground a dramatically more enclosed feeling, a superior elevated view for fans and also enable more spectators to book and guarantee their seats in advance.
Site work for the new open grandstands will begin tomorrow and is due to be finished before the Hawthorn-Kangaroos pre-season match on February 17.
Mr Bacon also confirmed Hawthorn, the AFL and the Tasmanian Government had further extended the agreement to play games at York Park to include 2005.
He said that the State Government had worked hard with the Launceston City Council to ensure the best possible outcome and he also thanked Hawthorn for its continued commitment to Tasmania.
Mr Bacon said that if the airline capacity into Launceston was maintained next year, the city could expect a significant tourism boost from the games.
Hawthorn's roster matches this season will be against Fremantle on April 14 and Port Adelaide on June 2.
Both are Sunday afternoon games that will be telecast interstate.
Hawthorn played Adelaide at York Park last May and attracted a record 17,460 fans.
Hawthorn chief executive Michael Brown welcomed the news and said that the extra seating would make York Park one of the premier sporting venues in the country.
"There are few venues that can accommodate 20,000 spectators, have modern facilities and a first- class playing surface," he said.
Yesterday's commitment brings total expenditure on York Park to nearly $8 million.
When the $17 million redevelopment of Bellerive is completed next October, it will have a capacity of 15,500 people.
