Has a capacity of about 12,000 and is egg-shaped. Located just next to the Bass strait in Burnie and can get quite cold,
especially for night games with it's local (NTFL) standard lights (4 towers). Has a cycling track surrounding the entire
oval and has three stands, two of which are quite small with the main (big) stand being undercover on the broadcast wing.
The biggest open stand on the outer (southern) wing is located behind the grass hill which covers the whole wing. The other
stand is very small and is located in the south-eastern corner of the ground. The scoreboard is situated behind the eastern
goals.
The official record crowd at the oval was 22,385 for a New Year's Carnival, but the official record football attendance
is 12,995 for an AFL practice match in 1989 between St. Kilda and Collingwood - this beat the previous football record of
12,951 for a match between St. Kilda and the N.W.F.U. in 1967. Although in 1992, the official attendance for an AFL
practice match between Carlton and St Kilda in the annual AFL Gala Day was 10,547 and because children's passes and free
tickets were not counted in the official tally so the estimated attendance was 13,000. The crowd saw a thriller, with
Carlton defeating St Kilda by 10 points. |
